This movie doesn't even come close to the first part. Fortunately, the same characters so it doesn't become a completely different film. The film picks up where they left off, only this time with that little boy in the lead. In this part they also go into the background of Samara, interesting but without surprises.

A great soundtrack, same characters and the story around Samara keeps this film going. Despite the fact that the film is nothing special, I was still captivated until the end.

Hideo Nakata, director of the Japanese original, was invited to show up for this sequel to the American remake; on paper a choice that should have worked out well. Already from the bad opening scene you realize that this is going to be an excruciatingly bad repetition of moves. Gore Verbinski's first part was especially strong because of the mysterious horror atmosphere that got under your skin. There is no mystery in this sequel; as a viewer you already know how it works, and as a result there is no tension. It also has nothing to do with the gruesome video tape at all, and Nakata drags in a lot here. Everything can just happen, there is no internal coherence in it. Then very soon I have very little interest anymore. Technically, it's not even a bad movie; music is atmospheric and in terms of images it is well put together. In this case, however, those are elements that cannot lift the film to a higher elan; You really needed tension, atmosphere and a stronger plot for that. Naomi Watts is always a very fine actress, but her talents are completely wasted in a movie like this. 2*.
