Shutter plot

"The most terrifying images are the ones that are real."

Young photographer Tun and his girlfriend Jane accidentally run into a woman on the street. The woman dies from her injuries and Thun and Jane flee the scene. Some time later, Thun encounters a mysterious shadow in one of his photos. He assumes it's just a bad photo. However, the shadows keep popping up and Thun notices that the shape of the shadow is very similar to the face of the woman he hit.

Sometimes you want all albums from an artist, but sometimes a simple best-of album is much nicer. And Shutter is kind of a best-of compilation album. All the ingredients of the J-Horrors that we have come to know - especially since Ringu - are collected here. But Shutter is not just a simple repetition exercise. In fact, in my view Shutter packs the best J-Horror has to offer neatly in one movie.

Shutter has a simple premise and - thank goodness - remains fairly simple throughout the runtime as well. In terms of story, a little more is revealed of what is actually going on, but without becoming far-fetched or extremely stupid. The film starts with mysterious spots and white streaks on photos, but it soon becomes apparent that there is more going on and the tension builds. The clichés pass by one by one: tension in a public toilet cubicle, long black hair, dark rooms and scary figures that suddenly stand behind you. Most of the scares are executed very well and the film is visually strong as well; everything looks well cared for and stylish. We then get more and more of the black-haired ghost, resulting in extremely creative sequences, which miraculously don't get clumsy. Finally, the film closes with a very strong climax. A Shutter may not win the originality prize, but for the execution the film should receive a considerable shower of prizes for me.

4 stars.

Apparently hadn't given a score/review for this yet, so with a review then. Nice Thai spooky horror film in the typical J-horror genre. The film is really strong and a good example in its genre, no flat and cheap looking decoction, but good tension throughout the film and really glued to the screen with moments. This is completely my thing and I'm going to give it a nice 8/10.
