In the hands of an atmospheric director like John Carpenter, about the most drowsy starting point imaginable - ghost pirates in a fog - is still an intense viewing experience. He uses his usual ingredients for this: the whining soundtrack, the claustrophobic of the locations and a neat suspense build-up in which the apparently normal becomes a little more mysterious. The fog effects are a bit dated at times, but nevertheless it still provides haunting POV shots 'out of the fog' as the ghosts go out of murder. 'The Fog' has the added charm that it takes a lot of atmosphere from the picturesque fishing village of Antonio bay. Truly a place that you will love during the film because it is so beautifully portrayed. That's what I miss in contemporary horror movies: the ability to be cozy and warm in a way, while not detracting from the creepiness of it. But perhaps I am now speaking from the warm glow of my nostalgia!?

John Carpenter is a minimalist director. The Fog is a minimalist film. A film that produces great horror effects with few resources.

In that context, not much is explained in the film. Except for an old fisherman sitting on the beach by a campfire who tells a raspy voice to several children a ghost story about a curse and a rising fog, almost nothing is said about the origin of evil. Only the bare necessities. And that is good. Thus the dark remains elusive for a long time and the strange mist keeps its mysterious intensity. Lovecraft at its best.

As we are used to from Carpenter, the atmosphere is solid again. The score has an important contribution to this. Delicate synthesizer sounds composed by Carpenter himself accentuate the suffocating and haunting atmosphere. When the fog creeps into the streets of the sleepy fishing town of Antonio Bay, accompanied by the sinister musical sounds, it feels very uncomfortable and oppressive in a nice way.

No major effects in this film. No obvious jump scares. No noise. No violence. No bloody lashes. None of that is necessary. The horror feeling is generated with suggestion, with subtlety, with feeling and with atmosphere.

Carpenter is like the old fisherman at the beginning of the movie. The fisherman who tells a ghost story to a bunch of children, which will keep the children very restless for many nights to come. Carpenter does the same. He tells a cartoon to the viewer. And the viewer cannot escape the suggestive and atmospheric power that lies in the images. The images are fodder for many restless nights.

The Fog is high-quality horror. Rather than stacking excessive effect upon excessive effect, Carpenter tells a ghost story that he subtly develops into a dark and terrifying horror experience.

Fantastic.
