Four years after my first acquaintance with William Peter Blaty's filmed Legion, I started watching this mega underestimated third part again. The opening credits/scene is a true work of art. Atmospheric, very creepy, the tone is set!

We are reacquainted with an old acquaintance, Kinderman, inspector of the first part who does not believe in the afterlife and goes in search of a murderer who commits the most gruesome murders and encounters old acquaintances including Father Dyer. Script is great especially with the great one-liners [start with Kinderman and father Dyer in hospital} The absolute star is Brad Dourif who plays an Oscar worthy role. His monologues with Kinderman are breathtakingly fascinating. Part three contains masterly shock moments that you rarely see in today's horror films. Like the hospital scene that's just so well done. The build-up, the choice of frames, silences and unexpected close ups. Nowadays the audience has to get as many shock moments as possible, otherwise the film will not succeed. What bull. Horror movies are better without every scene with a scare that you can see coming miles away. Too bad Blaty didn't make any more movies after III. In addition to being a master horror writer, he also shows a master of horror directors

Nice.

Another step up from the previous part. Now the director who also wrote the book seemed to realize very well that the series had fallen down. The Exorcist III again somewhat follows the lines of the first part, but carries on a bit further in terms of the unpleasant atmosphere.

For example, this film has a lot more tension and focuses more on this. Many scenes contain build-up. The soundtrack further supports the film really great, nice and dreamy and scary. A lot of scenes manage to get pretty exciting because of this, with a scare moment in the hospital as icing on the cake.

Acting is also nice, it's just a shame that a lot of characters are not that interesting. Scott, for example, is pretty boring. Fortunately, Dourif makes up for a lot, because he comes trotting with a pretty bizarre character. He's not really creepy, but he knows how to get lost in his role, resulting in a special character.

Furthermore, this is another film where you really have to pay attention, because details fly around. As a result, it really falls more into the lines of part 1. Still, as we trot towards the final, the film becomes a bit too silly and doesn't end very satisfactorily. Fortunately, the build-up is good and this film contains a lot of creepy scenes.

No, this film doesn't match the first part anymore, but it does make a nice effort. Lots of effective build up along with satisfying scares. It's a shame that the finale goes a bit too far and the denouement of the mystery isn't very satisfying either. Great movie, better than expected. Nicely atmospheric, nice and exciting, but part 1 remains the best part.
