The Abominable Snowman has plenty to offer in terms of suspense and beautiful landscapes. The moral of the film is also well expressed, but beforehand I had expected a bit more from The Abominable Snowman itself.

Furthermore, the acting was not always that good, so there are some boring parts in it. The scenes in the village in particular were rather mediocre. Peter Cushing and Forrest Tucker play solid.

Average

The shadow on the poster ultimately proves to be a good representation of how much the beast is seen during the film. But that's not a bad thing at all, because the Abominable Snowman ultimately turns out to be a pretty nice psychological thriller with adventure movie traits.

Peter Cushing is pretty good in this movie. I've definitely seen him in stronger roles, but his confrontations with Forrest Tucker are just really good. The human aspect is one of the most important aspects of the film anyway, and the relationships between the members of the group feel very realistic.

The images of the snowy mountain peaks are very beautiful. Like the Descent, for example, this is also about the whimsical environment that poses just as great a danger as the mythological creature that the group is hunted by. Most of the film really consists of climbing mountains and seeking shelter.

When the Snowman finally attacks, it's not because they mean evil, but simply because they want to be left alone. It is a combination of hysteria and the group's greed that finally kills them. The shot of a half-frozen Peter Cushing is very impressive.

The film may end a little too abruptly, but that's not so bad. The previous hour and a half of this early Hammer are more than worth it.

Not an adventure film that goes purely for the adventure. The expedition is therefore not very exciting. Yes, someone slips. And yes, in the distance we hear the beast give a scream.

And although the expedition moves in a beautiful panorama of mountain, snow and ice, the expedition members do not visibly suffer from the cold conditions. They rub their hands amidst the howling wind, straighten their snow caps once more and step boldly forward almost unfazed. Not much adventure there either. The characters are of an unearthly caliber.

No, little tension from events during the expedition. The film focuses too much on the relationship between the group members. The interpretation of the characters is very clear. Black and white and right and wrong. It is very easy for the viewer to draw sides. That is nice because there is still quite a bit of moralizing during the expedition to the yeti. The dialogues in which this happens are not great and the tenor is always the same. One is driven by commerce and is vulgar and wrong. The other is driven by ideals and is generous and good. So very clear.

And, of course, the generous one adds some depth by asking whether man is really more civilized than the beast he is chasing. Well, that certainly generates some discussion. It is, after all, an adventure film with a moralistic touch.

In the meantime, as a viewer, you are actually just waiting for the arrival of the Yeti. And it comes.

Yes, it's coming.
