Self-Help plot

College student Olivia has a strained relationship with her mother, Rebecca. Her new friend, Sophie, agrees to go with Olivia to a retreat that Rebecca really wants them to attend. The retreat is led by self-help guru Curtis, who wants to get the best out of the participants. From the beginning, Olivia is wary of Curtis and doesn't trust his cult-like pronouncements. Part of her distrust may stem from the fact that Curtis and Rebecca are married, making him her stepfather. Is this a genuine self-help retreat, or are Olivia's suspicions correct and is something sinister afoot?

After his previous disappointment, director Erik Bloomquist rebounds reasonably well with "Self-Help," in which he receives considerable support from a remarkably convincing Landry Bender. She almost single-handedly handles the sometimes weak script and delivers a credible balance between emotion and urgency. With this rather flat character, this is an absolute achievement for a leading role, but unfortunately, the supporting roles are far less so. The group members, in particular, appear unrealistic and theatrical, with questionable actions that defy all logic. Bloomquist (who also casts himself in a supporting role) boasts tight camerawork and a well-crafted setting, but builds too little threat or tension. As a result, the film never elevates to a definitive experience, but the foundation is solid and provides a compelling footnote for the future.
