Interesting.

Keil directs, but most people will be most surprised by co-writer Richard Stanley. A cult figure, after all. I have no idea how the two found each other, and this project has had a rather strange start (a co-production between Canada and Germany isn't exactly the most logical choice).

But Keil does it well. A film that beautifully blends horror and sci-fi, without truly neglecting either genre. Add to that a solid mystery story, and you have a film that can easily captivate for an entire runtime.

Still, this Replace is visually compelling, with a strong focus on color and light. The sets are also fantastic, though it's a shame that the film itself suffers from a few minor flaws. The camerawork and editing could have been a bit tighter, as could the soundtrack. It's certainly not bad, but it doesn't quite reach the level of quality that would make this a minor masterpiece. The acting isn't always flawless either, but that's the least of it. Add to that the rather dated-looking futuristic clinic, and Keil misses the mark by a hair.

Which doesn't detract from the fact that it's still a very enjoyable short film. I saw a lot of good things, but there were just a few too many minor errors.

3.5*

I didn't think much of it. The story didn't captivate me, and it wasn't exciting at all.

Well-presented, but a film I'll have forgotten by tomorrow. 4/10
