Poltergeist plot

"It knows what scares you."

The quiet life of the Freeling family is disturbed by ghosts. At first glance, the ghosts seem to be friendly: they move objects as entertainment for the family. But then they get mean and start terrorizing the family. They even go as far as kidnapping their daughter. Her father enlists the help of poltergeist specialists.

I am a fan of classics, and I also love horror. But horror classics really don't go into it. This is another one I can't take seriously at all. The effects, the lousy acting, it all has a negative effect on the already minimal tension build-up that makes you wonder how you can find this an exciting film. Maybe 30 years ago, for lack of better and because you were used to this kind of lame productions.

I just tried to see the humor in it, that might help. But apart from that schizophrenic blond poo, there was very little to laugh about. Well, the atmosphere of the American suburbs was pleasant at times... right?

1,5*

''I got beat up once by three kids. They took my lunch money. Maybe they got hit by a truck, and they're upstairs right now.''

Still a very strong look. Good cast, solid acting, strong script and a great story, but not nearly as scary as it used to be.

Three and a half stars from me for 'Poltergeist (1982)'.

In essence, there is little wrong with Poltergeist. The effects look beautiful, and there is no lack of atmosphere in this work. However, the film never grabbed me at any point, and then you have an emotional problem. I also had the feeling at times that Poltergeist is somewhat plagued by a contradictory view; for the most part it feels like classic Spielberg with that typical 'cozy' (for lack of a more accurate word) vibe and a certain family friendliness, but at times it does get exponentially more gruesome and mature ( an influence that I would attribute to Hooper, but I guess I just hit something in the end). Exactly how Hooper-Spielberg's working relationship on set worked remains a bit of a mystery (and the rumors that Spielberg was the ghost director remain persistent), but at least it was something that caught my eye. I also thought beforehand (be it through the poster or through many pop culture references) that television would play a bigger or more important role as a medium for the spirits, but in the end that is not really the case unfortunately.

Poltergeist is therefore a film that is not bad, but it never dragged me along, and in terms of vision it is not always clear what it wants to be. 2.5*.
