Poltergeist II: The Other Side plot

"They're back."

The Freelings' home has disappeared due to the events surrounding a poltergeist, but the insurance company won't pay. That's why they now live elsewhere, but the ghosts are looking for the family. Because the ghosts came in through the TV, there is now no TV in the house. But they're still after the daughter. What does 'the other side' (the realm of the dead) want from her?

It was again a bit of digging to find out exactly how Poltergeist went, but this sequel at least has an advantage that the original cast is as good as back. It took a moment, but the memory of the first part quickly seeped back. Furthermore, a poltergeist is not exactly new ghost matter.

I just can't remember how many horror clips the first movie had. I thought there were quite a few, but then I read here that the sequel had that more... It is my criticism of this film. It could have been a little scarier. And of course Poltergeist II has those great moments. The horror moments are absolutely amazing. Only the scene in the car didn't do much for me. Further compliments to Julian Beck. Emaciated by cancer to play such a role. I find it quite gutsy.

Also no trouble at all with the addition of Taylor. The Indian story gives a nice twist to the myth in this film. It runs well and there are plenty of fun scenes in it. Nevertheless, a half less than the first film.

The first Poltergeist may be the 'better' movie, but I've always found Poltergeist II more memorable. Partly because I saw Poltergeist II: The Other Side before, but primarily because of Henry Kane's character. Evil has a face this time and what kind. This extremely creepy pastor was played by theater actor and artist Julian Beck, who was already seriously ill at the time of shooting, and it shows. Little makeup is needed to turn Kane into a terrifying figure. His sunken face, his huge grin a la Freaky Fred from Courage: The Cowardly Dog and his mood swings, in which he jumps from extremely friendly to furious in no time. An excellent character and a nice addition.

Furthermore, little about Poltergeist II is such a clear bull's eye, but it is well put together. The film builds on the sympathetic characters from the first film (minus the deceased Dominique Dunne) and the perils of that family remain fascinating. The script mainly focuses on the character of JoBeth Williams, but unfortunately Williams has to cry a lot and 'be scared'. It makes her husband Craig T. Nelson a much nicer character, especially when combined with newcomer Taylor, played by Will Sampson. They provide some air in a film that is above all much more serious and more 'horror' than its predecessor. But Poltergeist II has all kinds of outliers, sometimes the film is suddenly sweet and dramatic and a second later it's terrifying and very dark again. Around the climax the film goes quite far - with a few somewhat clumsy sequences - but on the whole Poltergeist II contains a strong atmosphere with a good soundtrack and here and there also very nice special effects. But no special effect is as memorable as that pale, thin clergyman. God is in his holy temple.

4 stars.

This was pure nostalgia for me. Always secretly watched this film series with my brother in our room when these kinds of horrors were on TV.

Just reviewed it and I must confess that I now find it a real comedy. What a different time. World of difference in what should be "scary".

I found the acting really laughable and the so-called "ghosts" were even more laughable. Those dramatic faces combined with the overly dramatic acting makes it even slacker and funnier.

Definitely not recommended for this era. As horror then. If you just want a night of laughter and want something that looks good, is it recommended?
