Part four takes a different approach in terms of storyline and interweaves the past with the present and in that respect provides a different kind of feeling than the other two sequels. The desolate feeling is well reflected in the film and that also makes the film easy to watch.

Unfortunately, the emphasis on horror has been reduced somewhat and it all becomes far too explanatory, the mystery of the first part in particular has disappeared and that is a bit of a shame.

Fortunately, I don't think the film is really bad and after four Phantasm films I can also say that I didn't think it was great, but nowhere too bad. In that respect, Coscarelli has created a reasonable film series.

2.5*

No more irritating boy, but a more serious tone, in that respect it is closer to the first part. Yet there is now far too much explanation, which always raises even more questions. Furthermore, we also see too much Scrimm and Coscarelli no longer seems to know how to squeeze the story even further. The premise remains fun, just like Bannister, and there can never be enough horror sequels, but it is no longer very convincing.

The fourth part makes it clear that the stretch was really gone, which is why director Don Coscarelli makes it a confusing and rushed whole. The past and the present are clumsily intertwined and the horror looks a lot smaller in scale than its predecessors. Of course this was due to the reduction in the budget, but especially in such a case, as a director you have to be creative with your resources. That's what I miss in this film, which actually no longer exudes pleasure in any respect. The practical effects remain fun and the clumsy explosions in between provide the necessary entertainment, but the series becomes increasingly tiring to get through with focus. Bonus points for the exploration of The Tall Man, who gets a bit of background here for the first time.
