Strange case. Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat was delayed by two years and got a very limited (cinematic) release, but had the critics on its side and a large part of the horror people took it fanatically. A film that thrives on its theme and got away with it damn well. And then he comes out of nowhere with an unusually high budget Christmas horror. How?! How?! You won't hear me complain, but it's unique that this happens. Usually horror directors of his caliber are shot early in Hollywood, because there is no support for what the genre really needs / what the director wants to make. That's partly thanks to the fans of this genre, who are incredibly fickle. On the one hand there is a lot of whining about formulas, but when a film adopts a different attitude -for this time- AND is given the means to do so, nobody will walk away with it.... OUCH.

That attic scene is GREAT. It's like the 80's again, where crazy ideas were embraced and made with love (=practical effects). It's a no-brainer comparison, but I had to think of The Gate (1987) (beyond all comparisons that would be obvious) by the sincere pleasure that the (freaky) creations radiate. Pure craftsmanship and very effectively applied. You know you're doing well when you can keep your effects full on screen for a long time. Krampus does things that others don't (indeed it is often a budget thing, but trying would often be commendable). May grow with revision.

A year earlier around the Christmas period also made two attempts but fell asleep twice. Didn't get through the opening at the time where a family gets together to celebrate Christmas, while the family is not a typical family that gets along well, let alone like each other.

And since it was now Christmas again, I made another attempt to copy Krampus. And not unexpectedly, I was annoyed again by the opening with the family where those children are so annoying that you want to stick them behind the wall. So I left that part for what it was and quickly continued with the events that followed. Those events were a lot more hopeful.

For example, the daughter sets off in the snow and meets Krampus. The atmosphere then begins to rise and the first tension is present. The film picks up momentum, which certainly does a lot of good after the boring opening. The movie then starts to get quite wild, and one monster after another makes its appearance. The film seems to fluctuate and can't choose between horror or fantasy, but luckily the appearances of the elves make up for a lot.

Krampus isn't a movie I'll be watching around Christmas every year, but in retrospect it's a better movie than I thought a year earlier.

An amusing PG-13 horror comedy, which already shows in its opening credits that you should not expect scary horror. In fact, the first act of the film looks more like a Home Alone/Christmas Vacation family comedy. But what do you expect with comedic actors like David Koechner, Adam Scott or the recently deceased Conchata Ferrell. Only the presence of Toni Collette can strongly give the feeling of a horror movie. That best lady is also not often lucky in terms of families in film. Also in Krampus she is not so lucky with her blood relatives. We see an amusing chaos and it wouldn't surprise me - partly because of the design of the house - if the protagonist woke up one morning and his family was on vacation without him and two crooks trying to get into his house.

But instead of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, we get Krampus, a kind of less controversial Zwarte Piet. But this monster doesn't act alone, when he appears, cookies and toy dolls also become your main enemy. So I'm suddenly watching a half remake of the Full Moon films Gingerdead Man and Full Moon Demonic Toys. That was somewhat surprising. The film remains PG13, so it all remains fairly decent, but Michael Dougherty regularly pushes the limit a bit. Krampus is full of fun creations and it's nice to see the characters in the movie fighting with cookies and deadly toys. And the title character is also a nice appearance. I'm guessing that with an R rating the movie could have been a little more fun and crass, but oh well; there is nothing wrong with a dark but sometimes sweet family horror every now and then.

3.5 stars.
