Indigenous plot

"There are places you should never visit. This is one of them."

Five American friends travel to Panama to relax and hang out. They befriend a local woman in the bar of their hotel and - despite ominous rumors - the latter goes against her brother's will and takes the Americans to the pristine waterfalls in the nearby jungle. What begins as a harmless trip to a picturesque waterfall quickly turns into a horrific tragedy when she suddenly goes missing. When night falls, the friends realize the truth behind the rumors too late - the legendary, bloodthirsty Chupacabra is after them.

Too average.

I really liked Orr's first film, so I had quite some expectations for this one. Unfortunately, he lets it down a bit here. It seems as if he has lost all the zest from his first film, what remains is a typical horror that obediently goes through all the steps.

The flash forward to halfway through the film, the group of friends on a trip, the exciting exotic location with a story attached, the creature chasing them ... you can dream it all. However, it does not have to be a disaster, as long as the director brings it with enough dedication. But that's not the case here. Orr himself doesn't even seem that interested in his film and races through the entire setup.

When the film really starts, it's quite okay, but without the build-up it takes until the very end before the tension starts to do its thing. It never gets original, not even in the second part, but Orr already shows something more there.

Seemed like an assignment in between, maybe Orr gave up a bit himself, or his first was just a fluke. Hard to say based on this movie. In any case, he doesn't get out of it what's in it.

2.0*

Disappointing and predictable horror.

The beginning of the film is already standard. It goes like this: group of friends on vacation seeks thrills, gets wind of a legend, wants to go, is warned not to go, but goes anyway. You can still move over the standard opening. After all, it is as expected. Still, a little more explanation about the legend of the Chupacabra would have been appropriate. The build up took long enough for that.

On to the horror then. However, the horror is quite disappointing. There's a lot of thrashing and screaming in a jungle at night. The darkness makes for little visibility. Hence many evocative images and sounds. Not exciting.

It only becomes fun when the monster becomes visible. The monster looks terrifying. The scenes with the visible monster are therefore quite ok. Orr should have shown more of that. They arrive too late to save the movie.
