Pretty insane movie, this Exte: Hair Extensions. The movie swings between a number of genres and succeeds in each genre, but as a whole Ekusute is a bit disappointing.

As a crazy horror, top. The scenes where 'the hair' takes charge, are done wonderfully. The special effects are not great, but they do not disappoint either. Crazy horror scenes are alternated and fortunately the ghost face in the hair from the opening scene is not repeated more often, this came across as a bit cliché. As a horror film Ekusute is just fine and so crazy and insane that you will not soon forget it.
As a family drama, it fails. The family drama seems out of place in Ekusute, and actually it is. It seems as if the director wanted to add some depth to the thin plot. The scenes are convincing in themselves with the little girl, and the scene with the death of her mother and what precedes it is filmed well, but it still feels out of place.
As a comedy, not funny enough. The crazy guy with the weird overalls with American flag colors was funny in itself, but even this seemed very out of place in this horror movie and sometimes the attempts at humor were just a bit too lame for me.

All in all Exte: Hair Extensions was a bit different than I expected, the swinging between genres is not for me, but the horror part is so good that I can't give it a low score. A big 3 stars then.

A film that clearly deserves the title "Only in Japan". The tone is set right away with a security guard who notices that his nose hair is growing profusely, and what follows is quite bizarre.

A number of actors with a role that I did not expect from them. First of all, Kill Bill girl Chiaki Kuriyama, who also did not have the most sympathetic role in Azumi 2, but here she plays a sweet and caring aunt. And opposite that Ren Osugi, who I normally see playing quite serious roles, but here she plays a fantastic freak. His first moments are already quite strong in the morgue, when he wipes away a tear at the corpse. Also nicely done with how the other corpses look in his direction. Very strong. But the best scene is how the hairdresser with extensions is flooded with memories. Audiovisually fantastic, truly overwhelming.

Ultimately a film that is very entertaining, but that also suffers from the shortcoming that characterizes the somewhat earlier films of Sono: a mix of drama and comedy that does not always mix well. Especially the final scene is quite over the top, but so bizarre that it more than compensates. The hair literally flies in all directions.

Not always balanced, but very entertaining. The side note that the drama scenes are somewhat less beautifully stylized than the comedy/horror scenes. Nevertheless, certainly worth 4*.

In essence, director Sion Sono follows the familiar lines of this type of horror film, but the design of the threat is so creative that it wins a lot of bonus points. However, Ekusute has some trouble starting the story, because the completely idiotic figure of Ren Ôsugi causes a lot of irritation and the visual design of the background looks amateurish. The special effects may look good, the cinematography is significantly less beautiful. In addition, the chemistry between Chiaki Kuriyama and Miku Satô is effective, but the other characters come across as uninteresting and boring. It is mainly Sono's passion to present a far-fetched concept with sufficient dedication that lifts this film higher, but it nevertheless looks unbalanced and not always that captivating.
