Certainly not during 'Walpurgisnacht', the night of the devil. But Renfield perseveres and invites Count Dracula to London. Unfortunately, that visit has dire consequences.

The story is of course known, but I had never seen this one.

Bela Lugosi is cool with his close-ups and the film looks fine. Very atmospheric shot and the locations look beautiful. The castle in particular looks fantastic. Sometimes I feel like I was watching a play, especially when Edward Van Sloan, who plays Van Helsing, wants to get the hang of it with his advice and investigations. The ending disappoints greatly and creates a negative point. 7/10

This was again enjoying the illustrious figure Dracula. A classic and I think the first time Bela Lugosi has taken on the role of this bloodsucking count. A suitable person for this role with his imposing eyebrows and diabolical look. Strange, however, that this vampire's razor-sharp canines never come into view. And not a drop of blood is to be seen. Also strange I found the fact that the figure Renfield is running loose all the time in the so-called psychiatric institution. Furthermore, I thought John Harker was a rake of a guy who acted overly nerdy. Edward Van Sloan, on the other hand, was brilliant as the infamous Van Helsing. Add to that the atmospheric and dark sets and you get one hell of a movie.

3.5*

Good looking.

I actually saw this movie right after seeing the 1920s version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and it made little to no impression. It's high time that I help myself out with a film that is also a true classic in the books from the 1930s. Moreover, Lugosi here, an actor whom I want to talk to more about after reading his life story. can sympathize with.

Unfortunately, he is sometimes a slight disturber in this film. Sometimes extremely charming and impressive, but sometimes a bit too fake. There was no shortage of overacting at the time. It communicates with grand gestures and fierce expressions, but the acting is clearly the weakest link of the film as far as I'm concerned. Then a sometimes silly but charming Lugosi clearly comes out the best. Besides, I now really see him as the face of Dracula. No Oldman or anything like that.

What is great about the film is the atmosphere and setting it creates. Obviously the effects are outdated, but the quiet and ghostly images of the environment are exceptionally strong. Nice use of lighting, beautifully decorated sets and an atmosphere that, despite the short playing time, never neglects itself with silly or too fast editing. The rest is taken, and the removal of the bombastic soundtrack works excellently.

Certainly a charming classic this one, which I can taste good. I was fascinated to follow the characters in a story that is not particularly complex and knows how to entertain. The acting will never be my thing, but the setting of the film is. Dark, grim, but stylistic nonetheless. Rightly labeled as a classic if you ask me. Nice discovery.
