Dead of Night plot

An architect travels to the countryside to work on a house and finds that he has already seen everything there and already knows the people from a recurring dream. Some believe in his dream and a doctor tries to explain everything scientifically. This fact is a framework for all kinds of loose stories about ghosts, premonitions and a possessed ventriloquist dummy.

An architect is called to a country house and upon arrival he recognizes everyone present from his dream. The architect is certain that something horrible is going to happen. However, a psychologist present is skeptical, whereupon each guest tells a personal story about inexplicable events.

The stories all need to get going and are not all really Horror but sometimes even more comical. I found the Christmas story the most atmospheric and the story of the doll reminded me very much of Magic with Anthony Hopkins.

Ultimately, Dead of Night is quite an entertaining anthology, but it never really got exciting or macabre. It's nice that the architect ends up in an endless loop.

An interesting and atmospheric mystery, in which not all scenes work equally well, but which generally manages to hold the attention.
At times the film even feels a bit like a dream, with scenes that at first glance seem to have nothing to do with each other and events that make little sense.
The story surrounding the ventriloquist and his dummy even reminded me of the much later Psycho, pretty creepy!

Many different stories which keeps the pace pleasantly high.
The ending unfortunately doesn't give much explanation, but maybe that's the strength of the film? It was all a dream, or was it?

3.5*

Mystery and horror in this British anthology film from Ealing Studios. A country house in the English countryside is the setting for a strange encounter between six guests, with Mervyn Johns in the actual lead role as the last guest to arrive. The boundaries between dream, reality and the supernatural are explored in what follows, with Frederick Valk in the role of psychiatrist and scientific counterpoint. His theories and experience with psychoanalysis challenge the company, but are equally challenged by the company. Within the framework of the country house and the company, special stories of several guests are presented in flashback format. The framework and the first episode are provided by director Alberto Cavalcanti, the other three directors each take care of one of the remaining episodes.

Excellent atmosphere creation, and certainly an original approach for that time. Each episode is worth watching to keep your attention going, and it seems that certain elements have been able to find their way into horror cinema afterwards, as already mentioned on the forum. The concept of the film - the recurring dream - also seems to have inspired later makers and I have seen it before (in a younger film).
The direction is always on a high level and in the finale all registers are pulled out by main director Cavalcanti. It has become an intelligently written and atmospheric piece, with good acting performances.
