What a relief to see a movie in the cinema of less than 90 minutes. And that at a time when every film seems to be stretched to at least 130 minutes. Crawl reminded me of Don't Breathe from a few years ago, also such a nice short horror in the cinema. And just like Don't Breathe, Crawl also has such a nice simple but effective premise. In a few small scenes we immediately know who the characters are and then the tension can begin.

And Crawl is exciting. Unlike his Piranha remake, Alexandre Aja is a little more serious this time with carnivorous aquatic animals. Crawl isn't a pulp of constant gags - though there's certainly room for a smile here and there. But Aja mainly creates genuine tension; we sit in one room with our two main characters all the time and there is non-stop threat in the air, literally and figuratively. The CGI doesn't win the beauty prize everywhere, but for the most part it is quite convincing. And the film does what it's supposed to do, because with a running time of around 85 minutes it has little to no fat on the bones. A big contrast to an Annabelle Comes Home, one of those horror films where everything is stretched just for a simple jumpscare. In that respect Crawl is a godsend with its simplicity, strong execution and short playing time.

4 stars.

"Is there a hurricane in the area? Well, if everyone is evacuated anyway, I think it would be a good idea to do some repair work in the crawl space of my house where there is no one to help me anyway." An illogical reasoning, but one that the viewer is expected to swallow in this rather idiotic horror film in which gifted swimmer Haley Keller, after a disturbing conversation with her sister [Morfydd Clark], decides to ignore all warnings to kill her father [Barry Pepper]. to rescue. And yes, he is in a crawl space where he has been joined by a couple of alligators who are there for also quite vague reasons. Alright, we saw a sign with "Alligator Farm" on the way to the Keller house and apparently we have to make do with that. Also notice the effect the hurricane has on Haley's hair - negligible - and marvel at the answer to the question how fast you can swim if an alligator hits you in your leg, you arm and bit your shoulder. I know what The Black Knight would say in such a situation, but you should also take his statements with a large grain of salt.

Nice.

Expectation low anyway. On the one hand because Aja was never really able to convince after Haute Tension, on the other hand because that killer monster niche is not really my thing. Certainly in the alligator / crocodile happening not many really nice movies have been seen.

And then a movie like this is really not that bad. Not too much fuss, pointless loss of time and unnecessary delays, just some solid beasts in a limited and closed setting and build up some tension. That and the action always go up a gear, because if the first part is still fairly small, it will get bigger as the final gets closer.

Acting is above average for a movie like this, otherwise the alligators look pretty good. Not 100% convincing, but neither are they with classic effects. A few tight jump scares (the introduction of the first alligator is really one out of the book and some nasty moments. Aja is someone who has mastered the genre.

It is not very credible, but instead of credibility you get extra entertainment. A trade-off that I always like to see made. It is not an Aja masterpiece, no idea if there will ever be, but this is a very nice filler. Party for the horror enthusiast.

3.5*
