Abby is the blaxsploitation version of The Exorcist. Carol Speed plays the sweet Abby who becomes possessed by the demonic force. The power thatin Nigeriawas releasedby the local priest. Blacula actor William Marshall was allowed to appear in this film as an exorcist, because his film son (played by Terry Carter) seems to have no idea about it.
The acting is still reasonable, but due to the unusual choice of music (funk/soul), the film lacks tension. Furthermore, there was clearly little budget for special fx, because Abby's make-up is also of little significance. Furthermore, with the exception of the ending, there are few special fx. The ending with the explosions in the disco is still well done.
Compared to the original, this one has little to offer. However, for those who are curious, it can be found on YouTube.

This film was withdrawn from sale in the United States after Warner Bros. had filed suit against American International Pictures. The film was clearly seen as a rip-off of The Exorcist. Although "Abby" was highly profitable for the AIP, director William Girdler never saw a single cent of the profits. The lawsuit was heard shortly before his death, but it did not benefit the film. Carol Speed was approached by her agent to make an appointment with William Girdler for the role of Abby. Her predecessor demanded a masseuse on set, but due to the low budget this could not be accommodated. Not everything went smoothly on set. On April 4, 1974, a tornado ripped through Louisville, Kentucky. Filming was temporarily halted, but some generators were still affected. Carol Speed had taken refuge with Juanita Moore in a hotel lobby. However, this place had no shelter from tornadoes. Wrapped in blankets, they managed to survive the storm without damage. Actor Terry Carter broke his ribs while filming a scene. William Marshall plays the role of Bishop Garnet Williams. The actor was dissatisfied with the film's production. He was promised certain script revisions, but in practice nothing came of this.

"Abby" is better seen as a hilarious movie. There is little mention of horror. In my view it is clearly a rip-off of The Exorcist. This of course remains the absolute classic among the demons. You cannot expect that "Abby" with a small budget will surpass such a film. Perhaps reserved for a selective target group, but I have little use for it.

1.5 *
