A bit of poor man's Conan.

Coscarelli normally knows how to deal with low budgets. But now that he finally has a bit more to spend (his most expensive to date at $9 million), he is making mistakes.

Mainly boring, hardly any world building, lengthy with the occasional outlier when Coscarelli is allowed to return to his horror roots for a moment; see those embracing tree nymphs, whatever they may be.

Well, a fool like Singer (V) doesn't help either, let alone that flat fish of a Tanya Roberts (also once a bond girl).

Nice while it lasts, but expected a little more from Coscarelli.

The beast master. The title alone contains a monstrosity of a pulp film. And he is, if it weren't for the fact that I enjoyed this picture countless times as a child. It may have been almost 25 years since I saw this film again and I was surprised that I still knew very well what was about to happen.

In terms of setting, the film is somewhat reminiscent of Arnie's Conan and Red Sonja. The animals are somewhat sentimental and are in stark contrast to the somewhat dark side of the film. Those witches, the wild men and especially those bats are really terrifying and would not be out of place in some fantasy by Del Toro. That eye for example, great! Graphically it also looks quite okay in a world without drones. The final battle also looked great in the sea of fire.

So I really enjoyed it and for me it was pure nostalgia. Some idiotic images here and there, such as the tough guy waving his stick or sword. The literal jumping duel with the bear was also somewhat unpleasant. I really can't give this a passing grade, but it was still nice! It is a pity that the cast animals are said to have been treated in a less animal-friendly manner...

This Conan clone looks quite cheap, but it is still on par with the Conan films. The fact that the hero can communicate with animals and use them in his adventures is a good idea. Those two ferrets are certainly the sensation of the film. You could book Singer at Aldi prizes at the time, and he also plays like a wooden boy, although he would later do much better in the TV series "V".

The standard cliché story has weak dialogue and predictability beckons around every corner. Oh well, it is a film that seems to be aimed mainly at a younger audience and not so much at adults. Glad I saw this in the end, but it won't be possible to revise it anymore.
