Sally and Gillian Owens have always known they were different. After the sudden death of their parents, they were taken in as children by their aunts, Bridget and Frances, who passed the torch to Sally and Gillian and taught them all the tricks of the trade. The aunts also made no secret of the fact that there is an ancient curse on the Owens women and that all the men they fell in love with would die.

I saw this movie years ago and it has always stayed with me, only I can't remember the title. A year ago I suddenly thought of it again and then went looking for this DVD. Decided to get it, and I was looking forward to the review of the film that has stuck with me for so many years, especially the roles of Kidman and Bullock.
However, the review was a bit disappointing. The story is weak but the cast more than makes up for that, making this a decent film. The magic was gone, I thought it was more of a romantic film than fantasy. This movie tends to be a chick flick. Nicole Kidman also disappointed me, although she is a beautiful sight to behold. However, Bullock was convinced.
I liked a regular episode of Charmed, the old TV series, better than this movie.

Three times nothing. Not as a romantic film, not as a comedy and as a film about magic. The premise is interesting in itself, but only one man dies because of the curse, so very little is done with it. What we do get in terms of plot is unfortunately paper thin. Occasional side comment from a character that is clearly supposed to be funny but isn't. And the magic doesn't really surpass the level of a series like Sabrina, which isn't exactly top notch either.
Little atmosphere to compensate unfortunately. The atmosphere never becomes magical, and what remains of atmosphere is brutally turned upside down by the soundtrack full of terrible songs. The only bright spot are the beautiful ladies, but it doesn't get sensual anywhere either. Then rather The Craft or something, also a film about home, garden and kitchen magic, but at least with the necessary charged tension. The 0.5* for Practical Magic is therefore unavoidable.
