12-year-old Bea [Cailey Fleming] moves in with her grandmother [Fiona Shaw] because her seriously ill father [John Krasinski] has to be hospitalized. In the same apartment complex she meets Cal [Ryan Reynolds] and through him a number of Imaginary Friends (IFs) who are looking for the now adult children who created them. Doesn't sound very logical and that applies to the entire film. After some insistence, Bea decides to help the 'fantasy friends', but why is completely beyond me. It is full of imaginative, remarkable (drawn) figures with excellent voice work by Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Louis Gossett Jr., among others, but is never compelling. Ultimately, Krasinski goes for false sentiment and an unsurprising denouement. Reynold's interactions with the drawn figures prove that he is no Bob Hoskins. The Dutch spoken version is called Fantasievriendjes.

Good film about a girl who tries to help imaginary friends. A family film that can be appreciated by both young and old. Imaginative and colorful, making it easy to look away. An excellent voice cast with quite a few well-known names.

A fun family film with a convincing young lead actress, Fleming, whom we mainly know from the Walking Dead series. She gives a heartwarming performance and captivates the viewer with her imagination and fictional creatures. These creatures, IF (Imaginary Friends), look funny, and most of them strike a funny chord. For some of us, the story might also resonate with us, given our childhoods, when we might have had imaginary friends. Ryan Reynolds plays more on autopilot, solidly, but nothing more than that. The voices of the fictional creatures are provided by quite a few familiar names. The film doesn't manage to surprise, given its plot and progression. The punch line is obvious from the outset. It might not be a film you'd ever watch again, but it's still enjoyable to watch. 7/10
