Director Adam Green makes a mockumentary version of Nightbreed, in which he asks all his friends from the horror film world to participate. So sometimes suddenly Tony Todd, Mick Garris, Kane Hodder and Tom Holland pop up. Of these people, Ray Wise is the only one to play a character (seemingly because Green wanted to avoid expecting a real documentary). He is also the only one who does not wear a T-shirt with a previous Adam Green film on it for the entire film.

And therein lies the problem of Digging Up the Marrow. The idea is nice and the execution certainly has a few effective moments, but unfortunately it tends too often to a promotional film for Adam Green. His production company, his previous films and also his girlfriend are dragged in all the time. In addition, Green himself is not the best actor, but clearly likes to hear himself talk, so he has the lead role and does the talking 9 times out of 10. The effective scenes, small nods to the genre and a great role by Wise make Digging Up the Marrow not a complete failure. But a little less Green promotion and a little more attention to suspense would have been better.

3 stars.

A film that looks like a documentary but is not at all. Seems to have been made regularly to promote Adam Green quite a bit, because the references to Frozen and the Hatchet movies each time are not exactly a necessary addition to this story that had quite some potential. Unfortunately, this potential is not used, because it is mainly a long-winded elaboration in which all tension is missing. The moment when Adam Green, the cameraman (I forgot his name) and William Dekker are attacked in the car by those monsters, one of which (Especially that one, but also the other monsters looked great) in front of the car stands up is actually the highlight of this film.

Quite an entertaining snack from Adam Green, although I know he can do a lot better than this. Digging up the Marrow mainly relies on the satirical images in between, where Green makes fun of himself and his colleagues. The comedy of the film is therefore a lot more touching than the horror scenes, which really should not be. The threats are not exciting or creative enough and the atmosphere often falls flat, which means that this relatively short film ends up taking way too long. It is not sharp, rude, bloody or atmospheric enough to keep you interested, so that after a while you start wondering how many minutes will follow. The final is still okay, but it comes much too late. Green is definitely in the right place, but now a really above-average movie has yet to come out. This is still a bit too bland.
