First and foremost: I haven't watched the original and will stick to that. It is possible that the more negative reactions come from people who have seen it. I can appreciate this Christmas movie, the Christmas atmosphere is good in it. Beforehand I was not so charmed by a Santa Claus in court, but afterwards I laughed the most.

The biggest flaw is the child who is not allowed to be a child, but as the film progresses she becomes more and more a child. She remains a bit smart, but this is also part of her character. Would have liked her to have been a little more childish, though, she was a little too grown up for me now. Besides the fact that she doesn't believe, that didn't annoy me, that's what makes the film the way it is.

Of course the story is full of clichés, if you don't like that, you better skip it yes. I have no problem with that myself. I watch a Christmas movie for the goodfeel, there are very few movies in that genre that can come out surprisingly well. It is also all predictable, but I have no problem with that in these kinds of films.

The acting performances are fine. I sometimes find Wilson a bit over the top, but I think this is mainly due to her character and not to the actress herself. She portrays her role well. Attenborough also portrays the role of Santa very well, although my favorite remains Tim Allen in The Santa Clause. However, this one comes very close. All in all, a fine Christmas film that gets a good grade, 3.5*.

Miracle On 34th Street is a remake of the 1947 film of the same name. This film is considered a real Christmas classic (at least in the US) and won 3 Oscars at the time, including Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle.

In this film, Richard Attenborough has the arduous task of following in Gwenn's footsteps and does so commendably. Attenborough is by far the best point of this otherwise rather mediocre Christmas movie that is full of clichés. This remake was therefore moderately received by both press and public. The film was called 'A sentimental dragon' at the time, and that is an apt description, given the very tacky ending. Perkins and McDermott are not exactly credible as a couple and the then 7-year-old Mara Wilson especially gets on the nerves with her know-it-all statements.

The story is not bad and thanks to Attenborough's captivating interpretation it still manages to hold the attention. However, the rest of the cast cannot stand in his shadow.

It's funny that in this film they claim that Santa Claus is called Sinterklaas in the Netherlands. Then the makers have done relatively little research.
