Indiana, 1919. Homeless Hannah Parmalee imposes herself on the hospitable Ward family. Hannah can make herself useful as a cook and housekeeper and can therefore stay with the Wards. However, her real interest is in contacting the Wards' neighbor, the teenage Peter Trimble. Peter is her son from an extramarital affair, whom she has adopted and wants to know what has become of him.
