Vacas plot
A Basque valley between 1875 and 1936, the years of the Second Carlist War and the Spanish Civil War. The rivalry between Manuel and Carmelo begins before the war and ends in a trench where Carmelo is killed and Manuel, who would rather be cowardly than dead, escape. Their traits prove hereditary and so the struggle continues for two more generations, accompanied by forbidden love, woodcutting contests and vacas, cows that watch it all. The pattern is broken when Christina and Peru fall in love.
