Started off with an excruciatingly slow and poorly directed intro. Then the 'story' begins about a man in midlife crisis who goes in search of such a lost daughter. That is then stopped because he has to be friends with some African girl again. Against this he starts to talk pseudo-poetically throughout the film, which is very annoying. When the story finally starts to get going, it's over. What should have been a psychological thriller has turned into a nonsensical half-drama-half-mystery nonsense. With pretty good acting and typical Dutch photography (not ugly) and a plot twist. And because I like nonsense, I thought it was fine except for an hour. Unfortunately, you only have half an hour left which is just not enough for a pass. Unfortunately, because there would have been a bit more, if it hadn't been directed so uninspired. Maybe because it's a book adaptation. Just give me a movie like Vinyan, which broaches the same subject but is much more mysterious and interesting.

2.5* you for fun and I'm still mild. (Didn't read the book by the way).

Very surprising movie. Mainly because of my weakness for Hoeks, but van Aschat clearly steals the show. Nice themes too. The somewhat unhealthy father/daughter relationship that tends to a one-way incestuous relationship. Nicely daring themes and in the first half this also takes shape, scene with Esther is another example but in the In the second half, van den Berg makes himself a little too easy at times. Although this is not a criticism because the film already has a nice daring context.

The structure with flashbacks and hints to a not too healthy state of mind are extremely functional and the film benefits from this in the narrative area. Gives the film a very pleasant atmosphere in the first half. Van Aschat's quest is intriguing and even though the film slows down a bit in the second half, it always manages to hold the attention. I do think that the film relies too much on one viewing and weakens the whole with a review. That's why I keep it at a very solid enough level, but I feel like I'm doing the film a bit too short with that. She can earn that other half when revising.

Mediocre filming. In particular, the choice to adjust the content of the book did not appeal to me. The book was about a man who had lost everything and went mad as a result. The film is about a confused man who looks back on his life and searches for his daughter.

But that slant is quite different. The whole essence is different - in essence that need not be wrong. But beyond that, the film is also very messy. And the screenplay is to blame for that. Grunberg's sometimes great lyrics also work less on film than in the book, although Scholten van Aschat certainly does a great job of acting. In addition, I miss a lot from the beginning (parts 1 and 2) of the book, although that is not necessarily a bad thing since people now opt for a different angle. I just don't like that angle.

However, the pictures remain beautiful, in a wonderful photography with fine lighting. That keeps the attention, but just not enough for a pass: 2*.
