The only one who comforts him and doesn't judge him for his past is Vicki (Kyra Sedgwick). But a single misstep is enough to lose everything.

Strong film about an anything but obvious theme. A theme in which you take the risk as a director and certainly as an actor to carry it with you as a stamp. But that doesn't seem to be the case here, partly due to Kassell's serene approach. Very mature and handsome performance by Bacon who gives his character empathy and credibility. In Sleepers he has already worked with a similar theme to child abuse.

The content is also strong and nuanced, addressing all issues and taboos with which a perpetrator struggles. Walter is not a bad person, but clearly has a hard time controlling his feelings. Interesting scene at the bench: creepy and pitiful at the same time. The conversation with his brother, which turns out to be a serious downer with which he wanted to find out whether non-paedosexuals have already experienced that "feeling", the intense but fragile relationship with Vicki, the burden of carrying his secret, etc ...[/ spoiler]

Beautiful drama in which the difficult balance is kept in mind. Reminded me in that respect of Dead man walking with Sean Penn, although I found this The woodsman more neutral. Nice ending also where it is decided that it is not clear which direction is going, Walter himself does not know whether he will ever “relapse”. One to dwell on!

I had looked up the movie after seeing the trailer on another DVD. It looked fascinating and Kevin Bacon is usually a nice, versatile actor. Curious how he would handle this difficult role.

Fortunately, the answer to that question is simple: Bacon holds up well here and actually carries the entire film. Walter is an interesting and very unpredictable character. I felt sorry for him and also sincerely hoped that the old temptations would not take over. It's also nice that a clichéd approach is not chosen in which Walter ultimately turns out to be innocent, because I had actually expected that somewhere... No, it is all quite sincere and gray in that regard. In any case, the awkward scenes with the girl in the park made me very anxious.

It is a film that actually leans solely on that fact. Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick do well, but the other roles aren't that great. I had a hard time taking that cynical, pushy cop seriously; kind of a blemish on the film. Furthermore, this is mainly a 'small' film. Not too many locations or characters and little use of color. Of course that is all taken into account, because this does not want to be a film with a lot of fuss. It is precisely the simplicity that ensures that you are left with an oppressive, uncomfortable feeling.

3.5*

The Woodsman a film with an unusual plot. Film certainly has to rely on the acting and that certainly leaves something to be desired. In that sense it is a beautiful film. Very precarious storyline.
