Horror in the 21st century already has to come out strong in order to work in terms of atmosphere. It is mainly action scenes, scares and gore that work these days. The Vvitch takes you to a time when everything that went wrong was the devil's fault. And whoever made a mistake was a witch. Excellent debut with beautiful images and a constant tension. We will be hearing more from both actress Anya Taylor-Joy and director Robert Eggers.

There in the uncontrollable wilderness lurks lust, licentiousness and perversion. 'The VVitch: A New-England Folktale' (2015) ingeniously reflects the binary worldview of a Puritan settler family in the oppressive New England forests. An erotically charged horror film in which father William (Ralph Ineson) even made fun of his contemporaries with a straightforward interpretation of the faith and was banned from civilization. For daughter Thomassin (Anya Taylor-Joy) and son Caleb (Harvey Scrimshaw), there's no other way than to conform to their father's whims as they both reach an age of budding sexuality and forming their own identities. More oppressive than the possible presence of a paranormal entity, is how 'The VVitch: A New-England Folktale' (2015) outlines the consequences of such patriarchal family relationships. Where no leniency and mercy can be mustered for the imperfect or the human. Just so catchy because of the wonderful dialogues in almost unintelligible Old English, which is laced with biblical quotes.

Ditto everything Theunissen says above. This is wonderful horror. The rating here surprises me. I wonder what all those negative reviewers want. An 80's slasher? B-garment torture porn? Another James Wan with his chewed up jump scares?
Eggers goes back to the roots of fear in Christian culture: Evil as defined in the Bible and personified by Satan and all who rally to his side. Subtle through dissension and brutal through murder, a strict religious family perishes.
The horror is implied. Stephen King calls it the worst form of horror: terror. Not a ludicrous witch or gaudy magic. Just its consequences. And those two shots of her in her old flabby fleshy form, hunched over like she's straight out of a Goya painting. So let's see!
