Quiet biopic about the youth and teenage years of an award-winning American journalist/writer, who, in the absence of a father figure, grows up with trial and error with the help of his uncle. I'm not a fan of Ben Affleck, but he comes across well in this film. Nice supporting role also by Christopher Lloyd, who I think just plays himself.

As a child, JR [Daniel Ranieri] grows up in the home of his grandfather [Christopher Lloyd] and grandmother [Sondra James] while his mother [Lily Rabe] struggles to make ends meet. His father [Max Martini] works far away as a radio DJ and his rare visits always end in disappointment. Luckily, there is Uncle Charlie [Ben Affleck] who becomes a kind of surrogate father and in whose café JR finds a second home. Years later, the adult JR [Tye Sheridan] tries to build a career as a writer or journalist. Based on the memoirs of J.R. Moehringer, whose life story deviates little from the formula that has underpinned similar films. Affleck's routine acting doesn't help either.

Atmospheric coming of age story about a boy who grows up without a father and sees his father here and there in his life but his father is scum through and through. I agree that the film does not really stand out anywhere but at the same time it does give a realistic feeling. A film that is clearly based on a book and leans on the characters such as: Charlie, his mother, his grandfather, his friends at school and ultimately also the supporting characters in that bar; a kind of boulevard of broken dreams. Although nice people, you do not want to end up in that bar and you have to chase your dreams. In some ways that is a typical coming of age but still this film does well although the characters in the book are probably better developed.
