Georgina asks permission from her elderly aunt, Patricia Mercer Vanderpyl, to marry Captain Nugent before he leaves for France. Patricia refuses and, in response to Georgina's requests, gives her a diary from her own childhood to read. The diary unfolds the story of Patricia's marriage to Private Anthony Vanderpyl.
