The Set-Up plot

"I want a man … not a human punching bag!"

Movie that takes place in real time; so within 72 minutes. Bill 'Stoker' Thompson is a relapsing boxer who won't quit despite his wife's pleas. It doesn't look like he's going to win tonight's fight. His manager appears to have struck a deal with a gambler. Bill has to lie down on a certain lap, but he won't be told this until he's already in the ring. His pride is tested to the limit.

Excellent film in which a boxer on his return prepares for a boxing match. The film is set in real time and has a raw tone (Robert Ryan's acting and casting certainly contributes to this). The boxing match itself not only looks good, but is also exciting, partly due to the build-up that has taken place before.

Pretty nice film on a beautifully sharp Blu-ray from Warner Brothers Archive Collection, region free with English subtitles and available as "Made on demand" at Oldies.com. A beautiful shade of atmospheric black, white and gray tones in dark streets and a dingy boxing arena. During the boxing matches in the film, there were quite a few vicious people in the audience who hoped that the protagonist would be badly beaten. They acted this so realistically that I was annoyed by their behavior and this contributed to my feeling a lot of sympathy for the protagonist.

Very nicely filmed boxing noir by Robert Wise. I was also very pleased with the Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-ray. The film is about a desperate boxer in a cynically depicted boxing world. The film describes a stuffy little hopeless town in America and follows in real time (rarely screened according to Scorsese) a day in the life of a boxer.

The grayness that is displayed contrasts with the beautiful images. Calm tracking shots, close ups of the audience, the lover and the boxers are the highlights of this film.
