A slightly outdated Hollywood drama that at the same time remains superficial and yet clearly made with professionals. You have a great cast and crew who don't do a bad job (acting, camera, music), but it doesn't want to be anything special either. It may not know where to place itself in the movie genres. Not a real standard drama or adventure film, but a historical film that reflects the colonial facts, but also does not denounce harshly. Ironically, the film chooses the side of the local Indians in terms of story, but at the same time they are only extras here and it is sometimes a fight to see which settlers are most right.

The film certainly has enough atmosphere. I expected a little more spice. But on the other hand, it is precisely that somewhat conservative and Hollywood-quality approach that ensured that the film also did well at the Oscars.

The Mission is an intelligent spiritual film outfitted in stunning cinematography and music. Perhaps the theme does not appeal to the wider public and is therefore one of the most underrated films of all time.

Film that had been on the list for a long time, a movie poster that I remember from my childhood, which came out last night and the expectations were partly or partly not met.

A fine drama unfolds for the first half an hour when Irons ventures into the jungle, and De Niro, as is often the case, once again cannot control his anger. The conversation and almost scuffle, when De Niro grabs Irons by the collar, does come across as very played and weak. The battle that De Niro then wages with his 'burden', the net with armor and other equipment is touching and beautiful. Even better how an Indian liberates, forgives and redeems him with that gesture. Very young Liam Neeson by the way.

Then the film falls a bit dead in the middle part in my opinion. The talk about transfers between the two countries, slave trade and church meddling takes too long and just isn't engaging enough as far as I'm concerned. The run-up to the battle also takes a little too long. I also find the music a bit out of place during the fights. The ending, on the other hand, is good again, be it unrealistic and on the feeling, the people stay together under the guise of faith, Irons first and when he falls his task is taken over by someone from the Indian tribe. A good ending would have been misplaced and it also gives the film, which flattens out a bit, especially through the middle part, a sharp edge.

Reasonable drama, very beautiful music, beautiful nature, but that's about it.
