Reasonable film, from which you can expect a lot given the cast, but which does not deliver.

It is a film with a slow pace, which contains quite nicely shot pictures and images, and decent, sometimes beautiful opera-like music.

The actors vary. Depp plays the typical gypsy, but is not that convincing. The same goes for Ricci, who in fact repeats her role from Sleepy Hollow here. Blanchet is already better, but the best role is played by John Turturro. As a rather arrogant opera singer, he manages to come across very convincing. However, the story is messy. Some storylines are not completed at all, which sometimes makes it seem as if a piece has been cut out of the film. It feels unfinished and the ending is partly because of that unsatisfactory.

Too bad, because it could have been something beautiful.

2.5*

Reasonable film about a little Russian girl who goes in search of her father who has emigrated to America. The film is actually a bit too full for the running time. The characters are not always interesting (partly due to the sparse dialogue and despite the cast). Beautiful images and beautiful music, which gives it just under 3.0 stars.
