The 1950s: Peter Appleton is a screenwriter who, like many other film contributors, has been unjustly blacklisted for suspected communist sympathies. He gets involved in a strange car accident, loses his memory and ends up in a small town in California. Here he is mistaken for a long-lost son. However, the witch hunters find him and force him to testify before the Senate.

Finally.. since a very long time I have re-watched this one. Jim Carrey used to be my favorite actor and is the reason I'm on MovieMeter. I really enjoyed his comedies. I couldn't appreciate his more serious films back then. I want to review them all again (Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and The Truman Show). But I started with the one I used to like.
And that was The Majestic. I don't know why this one appealed to me before, but it did. Still. Jim Carrey is comical .. but can also handle the more serious work. He shows that in this film. I really liked his role. But the rest of the cast is also convincing. The story is very beautiful and continues to be captivating. It does take a long time, and maybe it gets a little long at the end, but that doesn't make it really boring. I even thought the trial was an interesting scene. And the one is fun too. In addition, the film has a certain, warm atmosphere that he carries with him all the time. The restoration of The Majestic is also very nice to see. And of course a very strange moment when Peter sees his own movie and knows who he is. Again convincingly acted by Carrey.
Maybe the movie is a little bit gooey. And it's not as good as Frank Darabont's two best-known titles, either. Nevertheless, I still think this is a special film. It's simple, but very well presented. The whole story also came across well to me. That's why I'm not going to lower him much in grade. Because it is still a beautiful film. That's what I thought 5 years ago.. and still today!

Once again we see Carrey in a serious role and he can certainly do that (which he certainly proved in eternal sunshine...) Beautiful film, beautiful and fairly original story and good acting...

Good film about a scriptwriter in trouble who loses his memory after an accident. The film is set in the early 1950s and is well dressed in that capacity. There is also a nice nostalgic vibe to old Hollywood. A nice story and although it could have been a bit shorter, 3.5 stars are in order.
