Excellent film in which the king of England calls together his three sons to appoint the heir to the throne. The film takes place during Christmas in 1183. Betrayal, love, intrigue, political games and all within one family. Well constructed scenes and well written dialogues. The strong cast, with a debuting Timothy Dalton, completes the whole.

Watched because it stars a lot of well-known actors, including Hopkins and Dalton, who apparently appeared in their first feature film. Interesting. The film dates from an era where, in my opinion, the acting has too much of a stage style and someone like Hopkins apparently does not shy away from that. In any case, the entire film feels like a play filmed on location and that is not a plus. Lots of long slow dialogue along the lines of "I know he knows that I know he knows" and then the running time starts to feel long. The only positive thing about the film is Barry's soundtrack, which is very nice. 1*.

Interesting story, good decoration and some actors with a lot of charisma. But it is also very theatrically acted, the film feels very dated and none of the characters managed to interest me, let alone touch me. Then those 134 minutes feel like a lot. Despite the qualities, I really started to get bored. 2.0*.
