Six wounded soldiers await their departure home. One is Corporal MacLachlan (nicknamed Lachie), a stubborn Scot who keeps aloof from his fellow patients. The doctor and head nurse ask the other patients to be patient and kind towards Lachie, because he has a terminal illness. However, Lachie refuses any offer of friendship until he receives a complete Scottish outfit from them on his 21st birthday. Then he is finally told that he is dying and his friendship turns to bitterness because he thinks the others were only driven by pity for him.
