Domineering rancher Matt Devereaux doesn't want to believe the pioneer days are long gone and keeps arguing with the sons from his first marriage. However, he gets on well with his son Joe from his second marriage and when Joe ends up in jail, Matt has a hard time.

It is indeed striking that Widmark is not completely convinced in his role. It may also be difficult to shine when someone else is already doing so, namely Tracy. He plays everyone else off the screen with his role as an unsympathetic patriarch.
The two brothers, next to Widmark and Wagner, appear very pale. They hardly play a role, even though they are in the picture enough.
The recording techniques of the past can thus be revived. This is a lot more enjoyable to watch than a whole bunch of modern-day westerns.

Good film in which four brothers have been working for their father as cattle herders for years. More of a family drama in a western setting. The relationship between the four brothers and their father and the four brothers among themselves is well developed. A bit melodramatic when it comes to the obligatory romance. There is no shortage of beautiful, wide shots. Spencer Tracy is excellent as always.
