The film is well put together. It is captivating. Good acting. A bit too long

“The world needs to know!”

Julian Assange and WikiLeaks are interesting subjects for a film, but The Fifth Estate shows that it is not enough for a strong film. Because The Fifth Estate is flashily filmed, has strong acting and its exciting moments, but also feels empty and superficial.

The meeting and bond between Assange and Berg, the founding of WikiLeaks, the quarrels and eventual estrangement between Assange and Berg etc. It is all neatly addressed, but it never really becomes interesting. This is also because the most interesting part, the clash between the violation of privacy and the right to information, is very poorly developed. And Assange himself remains a somewhat strange character, which Cumberbatch of course can play like no other. It is all entertaining and smooth, but it never becomes interesting.

Adaptation of Daniel Berg's book about his collaboration with Julian Assange from the early days of WikiLeaks to the witch hunt that begins after WikiLeaks posts sensitive, controversial documents online without any editing. Cumberbatch is superb as Assange: he plays him without irony, without moral judgment, and he captures the essence of Assange's complex personality. David Thewliss, Peter Capaldi, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie and Stanley Tucci give the story the weight it needs to make the impact of WikiLeaks clear to younger viewers. However, Condon should not have tried to make both a character study and a journalistic thriller. As it is, it comes across as a bit rushed and falls short on both counts to really stick. Assange and WikiLeaks deserves a miniseries at the very least.
