Solid quality production, although it is on the long side. This film does not opt for an accurate and factual representation of the famous diary, but opts for a more romanticized version of it. The diary therefore feels more like a source of inspiration than that it is literally followed. The character portrayed by Anne here seems quite accurate to me, although I think it has been edited a bit to make the film more attractive (in the eyes of the makers). As a free interpretation of Anne Frank, it has become a successful quality work. I did find the long duration a downside, something I didn't have with Anne Frank: The Whole Story (2001) (4.5*) , which is just as long, but remains more faithful to the facts from the diary. Moreover, unlike this one, that film picks up where the diary stops. As far as I'm concerned, that is the better of the two, although this version from 1959 is certainly not bad quality. 3.5*

May 4, Remembrance Day, seemed like an appropriate occasion to revisit this 1959 Hollywood classic. But guys, am I in advance shocked by the negative comments in this forum.

For the record: it was never the intention of 20th Century Fox to make a docudrama about “The Diary of Anne Frank”. This is the film adaptation of a successful 1950s Broadway show, which in turn is inspired by the diary. One-to-one comparisons with the original diary are therefore of little use. Then you better watch the miniseries Anne Frank: The Whole Story (2001).

This film by George Stevens is in itself a gripping war drama with a lot of attention to the mutual relationships and tensions of frightened people, who could barely move and sat on each other's lips for two years under appalling circumstances. With no more than six, seven weeks of “corona experience” I cannot imagine how that affects the human psyche.

The film was showered with awards and critical acclaim at the time. Rightly so in my opinion, because it is a beautiful, appealing film, shot in gloomy black and white, which is very appropriate given the context.

Excellent interpretation of the diary. The whole thing could have been shortened a bit, to about two hours I think. This is especially true for the romantic scenes, which are just a bit too Hollywood anyway.

I find the factual inaccuracies in the film of minor importance to the story and the message, and therefore did not bother me at all.
