After admiring The Pledge and Into The Wild by Sean Penn in the director's chair, now also tried The Crossing Guard. And this is another pretty strong and gripping film of his. It all looks like a straight shot for his rape revenge film, but it turns out differently in the end. We have to deal with a cynical, stubborn Jeweler Freddy Gale, who is very well portrayed by Jack Nicholson, who has been struggling for years with the trauma of the daughter who was hit by a car. When the culprit is released, he decides to take revenge. The culprit is John Booth, also brilliantly played by David Morse, who I haven't really heard of before, but he steals the part anyway and basically he's someone who wouldn't hurt a fly. When Gale's revenge campaign fails, and Gale gives Booth three days, it turns into 3 hectic and quite tense days, as Gale keeps messing around with his torn marriage, dead daughter and his revenge plan, and Booth tries to make something out of his 3 days but in the meantime with a considerable sense of guilt. I just thought the climax of the movie was one of the most moving and strongest moments I've seen in a movie and it really grabs you by the throat. You see that taking revenge doesn't solve anything in the end.

And that makes it a wonderful film from Penn in his early years as a director. He only makes movies every now and then. In principle you could call this the opposite of Death Wish and all those other revenge movies.

Average.

The first fifteen minutes tells the situation through images. Dialogues are largely absent and it is mainly the tone that attracts attention.

Unfortunately, it quickly deteriorates from then on. Strong moments alternate with lesser moments, and I find the story of the perpetrator absolutely terrible.

The ending promises to be strong - the scene in the restaurant is magnificent - but the layer of sentimentality is to puke.

Jack Nicholson single-handedly keeps the film standing. He is surprisingly subdued at times, but those scenes are by far the strongest.

The supporting cast isn't too bad either. David Morse has an annoying voice, but acts well. There is also nothing to criticize about Anjelica Huston and Robin Wright, although they have little screen time.

Sean Penn's directing is pleasant. He mainly lets images speak and I like it that way. Musically it's all right too. The combination seems worth gold - the bitter undertone makes the viewer feel uneasy - but the sentimental turmoil at the end spoils the atmosphere anyway.

Even slightly less than The Pledge.

While the film was still somewhat atmospheric at times, that is no longer the case here. Penn again fails to tell a fairly disturbing story in a compelling way. With the exception of the first 15 minutes in which there is some playful audiovisual fiddling, it does not hold the attention at all. It's also a shame that Nicholson can't escape the malaise, normally a certainty.
