Smilla's Sense of Snow plot

"Some Tracks Should Never Be Uncovered."

A six-year-old boy falls from the roof of an apartment building in Copenhagen. Everyone assumes that this is an accident. Also the police. Smilla, however, thinks otherwise: according to her, there is malicious intent in the game. She bites into the matter and is helped by a bizarre stranger whom she only knows as 'The Mechanic'. Her investigation leads her to the international business world, more specifically to the ruthless Tork.

Smilla's Sense Of Snow starts as an atmospheric, intimate and, above all, promising film in which Smilla's character as a displaced Greenlandic is beautifully highlighted. However, halfway through this print there is a remarkable break in style. Suddenly all the ingredients of the action thriller are deployed. The soul and romance of the story disappear and make way for an everyday action scene that seems to have been plucked from a dead James Bond film. The result is a disappointing film adaptation of Peter Hoeg's bestseller of the same name from '92. A shame for the talents of Julia Ormond, who nevertheless manages to hold her own in this ailing course. In the supporting roles we also see deserving actors such as Gabriel Byrne, Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave. For the Danish filmmaker Billie August, from whom we have already been presented with great films such as Pelle De Verovenaar and The Best Intensions, this is one of his lesser films, just like The House Of Spirits based on the novel by Isabelle Allende. ***(6/10)

One of the most beautiful movie titles ever - it sounds good, it arouses curiosity and it is also reflected in the plot. And it's a fine film too, although it seems rather underrated here. Many viewers may be misled because the plot takes a different course than usual.

The cast is a treat anyway, with a beautiful leading role by the handsome Ormond, and a lot of big names in the sometimes small supporting roles, up to and including Vanessa Redgrave. Harris's bad guy suits him well, and the more ambiguous presence of neighbor Byrne is also nicely done.

And yes, I may still have to say that that parka suits her, but Ormond is also not very convincing as a half-ice dog catcher who goes for a day's walk at -40 without batting an eyelid. Very beautiful pictures of nature.
