I agree with the neighbors upstairs. This was mainly a bland costume farce with a meager story. And even the well-known cast can only half save the film - Paltrow and Affleck, for example, I still found entertaining, Fiennes not so much, and a few of those supporting roles were really too bland for words (that theater owner for example, brr). Anyway, the jokes and the Shakespeare references were nothing special. It does indeed still look reasonably far away and it still looks okay in terms of costumes and atmosphere, but it is a no-brainer of a film and seven Oscars for a not very successful light-hearted snack like this is a joke.

Empty.

Especially on a visual level, it's a mystery to me how this movie got so many Oscars. Those Oscars are also the only reason why I watched this movie, because normally I don't like these kinds of movies. I was therefore quite looking forward to a playing time of 123 minutes.

And so this film is not much better than the other films, only slightly lighter. Especially in the beginning it is noticeable that this film contains a layer of humor, which makes it start lightly. Gradually, the romance and drama start to take over and it weakens again, but the start was actually doable.

I don't think there's anything special about acting here. Fiennes and Paltrow are not the strongest duo together and I found few scenes between the two impressive. I couldn't find any real chemistry, probably because I can't imagine it, but apparently that's different with a lot of other users. Supporting roles are slightly better, but also too theatrical.

Visually it is empty. Normally these kinds of films are completely crammed with details and other matter to make it all as atmospheric as possible, but that is not the case with this film. Empty settings, boring camera work and regularly an almost sad appearance. It's too much like a movie just filmed in some random old location.

Furthermore, it was difficult for me to get through, the 2 hours sometimes seemed to pass. And that probably has to do with the fact that I have nothing to do with these kinds of films, but 7 Oscars do create expectations. Unfortunately, this is a film that is not up my alley at all and therefore I can't do much with it. Still points for the light-hearted start and some good supporting roles. Other than that I didn't like it at all.

After twenty years (roughly) I have finally reviewed it and I am pleased to say that the film still looks just as fresh and fruity as the first time. In addition to the frivolous story about William Shakespeare and his masterpiece “Romeo and Juliet”, the first-class acting by the high-quality cast, the beautiful settings and the beautiful costumes stand out. In short, a joy to watch.
