Salvo d'Acquisto plot
A sense of duty makes a young policeman refrain from taking an active position in 1943, although his sympathy lies with the left-wing partisans. When the SS takes power in his town, a bomb explodes and twenty civilians are taken hostage to be executed, even though the explosion was the fault of a German. After futile attempts to bring this truth to light, the agent decides to take the blame.
