Presumably because I'd just reviewed Satyricon a few days earlier, Roma was a bit of a disappointment. All the usual Fellini ingredients of color, bustle, music, characters, and vitality were present and functioning properly, but for some reason the mosaic didn't grab me as I'd expected. Perhaps I should revisit it again sometime.
Incidentally, from the first time I saw this film (thirty years or more ago), I strangely didn't remember the street food, the revue, the brothel, or the fashion show, but I did remember (and only) the fading frescoes. Apparently, there was a simultaneous magic (of the discovery) and a tragedy (of the disappearance of something so wondrous) in it that has stayed with me to this day.

In Roma, Fellini paints a picture of Rome in all its guises: the city of nightlife and entertainment, the city with all its architectural splendor, the city of fascism, the city of faith, decadence, and fashion. Aside from paying tribute to the city, I don't find much else to enjoy in the film. I couldn't immediately find a logical flow. The images are all very beautiful, and cleverly edited, but that's about it.

A DVD that's been sitting on the shelf for years, and I finally picked it up (before I want to rewatch some Fellini films). The concept, atmosphere, cinematography, and photography (Fellini in color, the second time for me, I think, after Amarcord) are all excellent. However, you follow a variety of characters (or rather, you don't really follow them) and scenes over the years, none of which are bad in themselves, but together they become quite boring over a good two hours. The film relies on the overall atmosphere, with Rome as the main character, but that never really comes across for me. A shame. 2.5 stars.
