France, 1719. Louis the 14th is dead for 4 years, Philippe d'Orleans is the regent. He is liberal and a libertine. His right-hand man, Dubois, an atheist priest, as libertine as Philippe, tries to take advantage of a small uprising led by the Breton nobleman Pontallec to become archbishop.
