Steven Conway sails to a school on an island in California and searches for the cause of his son's mysterious death. The remote elite military school is run by Major Redfern Kelly. His secretary, Jennifer Evans, asks Conway why it took him four months to inquire about his son. He explains that he had been in Pakistan for the past few months on business and recently discovered that the boy's now-deceased mother had sent him to the academy. He asks to see his son's records and to speak to a student, "Crip" Hastings, who may have witnessed the boy's death.
