”I thought that small talk was too small, I thought big talk was too pretentious, I thought music was noise, and I thought art was bullshit.”

Great movie again from John Cassavetes. A beautiful script about an actress who is very concerned about her age and the associated aging. Because she also has to play such a role in a theater production, she ends up in a kind of crisis.

Leave such a role to Gena Rowlands, because she plays so well here. She gives a great performance, almost destroying herself, looking deeply depressed and comforting herself with alcohol and cigarettes. And despite that, she remains sympathetic and convinces every second that she is on screen. The other roles, including those played by Cassavetes himself and Ben Gazzara, are also well portrayed, but are slightly overshadowed by Rowlands. In any case, there is always good acting in Cassavetes' films.

Besides the great acting, what makes this film so fascinating is the thin line between the play in the film and reality. Cassavetes seems to want to play the viewer a bit and I must say they succeeded quite well. At a certain point I didn't realize whether a certain quarrel was real or whether it was part of the play. And that happened a few more times.

I liked the ending of the movie the most. The play where Rowlands is drunk on stage is extremely entertaining and Rowlands' performance there is truly phenomenal. It also really fit the film and I caught myself really enjoying myself at that moment. The movie couldn't have ended better for me.

An impressive viewing experience, this is clear.

4.5*

All you have to do is say the lines clearly and with a degree of feeling...

According to the elderly writer (Joan Blondell), it's so easy to play the lead in her play. Actress Myrtle (Gena Rowlands) has a different view on acting, influenced by method acting. She wants to discover something in herself that will allow her to bring the character to life. Because of her struggle with this role, the distinction between actress and character gradually fades. She continues to act even after the curtain has come down; she comments as herself in the middle of the play. Factors contributing to this are her excessive use of alcohol and tobacco, her fear of aging as an actress and thus not being allowed to play jeune première anymore, and a fatal accident of a seventeen-year-old girl in which she lost her younger recognizes itself. This girl appears a few times as a hallucination.

We get to know the play within the film in fragments through fragments of rehearsals and premieres, first off-Broadway and finally in New York.

With their free approach to acting and improvising, Cassavetes and Rowlands have developed a kind of film that relies less on a traditional elaborate plot. In doing so, they influenced the Scorsese-De Niro collaboration, among others.
