Asako [Erika Karata] thinks he has found the love of her life in Baku [Masahiro Higashide], until he leaves to get shoes and (finally) disappears without a trace. Two years later, Asako has moved from Osaka to Tokyo and meets Ryôhei [Masahiro Higashide], who is physically very similar to Baku, but has a very different personality. Asako and Ryôhei build a solid, apparently happy relationship. Until Baku appears out of nowhere again. Atmospheric, well-directed romantic drama with an intriguing main character, a convincing double role by Higashida and a beautiful denouement.

I couldn't do much with the last half hour, but those hour and a half before that were phenomenal and beautiful. What is particularly striking is that this is such a serene film, with a wonderful tranquility even in busy urban areas. That is partly modern technology that makes that possible - Antonioni or Ozu would probably have wanted to do that too, but they didn't have the material for it yet. The film is therefore very pleasant to watch, but also fascinating with many beautiful little moments between lovers. But then in the restaurant comes that one switch and with that part after that everything that was so good before has also disappeared a bit. Discomfort takes its place and although in the director's choice snap it doesn't always work out well. Mainly because I don't understand Asako - her leaning towards her former boyfriend isn't strong enough for me psychologically which makes this piece less strong. And then the movie could have ended but even gets a little bland when she tries to get back to her later boyfriend. Anyway, I've also seen so much beauty that that piece in itself deserves a high score. 4.0*.

My third from Hamaguchi in a relatively short time after "Drive my car" and "Wheel of fortune and fantasy". They are all somewhat similar, but I liked this one the best. I was completely sucked into the story of the young Asako who goes in search of the perfect love, but through doubt and impotence hurts himself and especially the other. Admittedly, the handsome Erika Karata, also had appearance has a positive influence on the whole.

Asako I & II is a beautiful layered coming-of-age where the main character has to choose between the heart or the mind, although at heart she just loves two men. No classic romantic talk, but a socially layered drama. In one way or another I felt sorry for her, but that also has to do with Hamaguchi's layered direction. It puts Asako in a dilemma: go for a stable, but "dull" relationship or go for the uncertain adventure. Beautiful!
