Young George Dryden sees his mother suffering from his stepfather's cruelty. During one of their arguments, the mother is killed by a lightning strike, and from that day on, George no longer believes in God. He grows up and becomes a doctor, marries Anna Ryder and has a daughter. Anna begins an affair with a painter who, after being chased out of the house by George, is left injured in the street. Anna, completely hysterical, dies of a heart attack. Years later, his daughter is getting married, but just before that, George finds a pile of love letters from the painter to his wife. In a fit of rage, he attacks his daughter, who becomes injured and ill. Is George too proud to invoke God's help?
