Special film by George A. Romero. You could almost call it an American vampire take on the Nouvelle Vague. The Nouvelle Vague mainly refers to the very special assembly and découpage. That this together with Romero's special way of bringing shots to life turns out to be a golden combination, Martin clearly demonstrates. The modern aspect is also very fascinating, the nightly conversations with the radio station and the vampire, who has become wiser through experience and injections, drag you smoothly through the film. Must also admit that this is easily one of the most artistically and psychologically interesting horror films and one of George A Romero's greatest achievements.

Very nice video of Romero from the time when he was still a bit innovative. The pace is quite slow and not much happens, but it is still a fascinating whole because the vampire film is exposed completely differently.

John Amplas as Martin does an excellent job here as a somewhat unworldly and lonely boy who simply has a "disorder" with which he has to live and survive. You almost feel sorry for him.

This poster is very ugly unlike my cool Vhs cover.

I saw Romero's most important zombie films years ago and I thought that would suffice. But this Martin is a completely different cup of tea. A fascinating mix of psychological drama and horror in which the viewer has to draw his own conclusions where the boundaries of personal responsibility, ignorance and morality are crossed. Or the reality of inner demons being scrutinized.

The storyline does not have a single dead moment (well) with characters provoking each other. Martin is beautifully played by John Amplas and we should know it from other Romero films (but I remember zombies in particular). This movie is very low low budget and that makes it all the more impressive. Or how to make a virtue of necessity? The film has a gritty atmosphere, with scenes in underdeveloped suburbs, sporadic street violence. The 70s zeitgeist on film appeals to me anyway. It all looks authentic and without nonsense. The gore is by cult man Tom Savini who also acts in the film. In addition to the beautiful directorial work with at times beautiful photography by Romero and co, it is completed by the excellent music score by Rubinstein.

I'm afraid that this is typically one of those films that falls between two chairs. Too soft for the hardcore horror lover and too heavy for the psychological drama lover. Glad to have discovered this somewhat unknown gem from Romero's oeuvre. Special job.
