Brownsville, Pennsylvania, shortly after World War II ended. Ivan Bibic has only been able to endure the torture and humiliation in a Japanese camp by constantly thinking about his childhood sweetheart Maria Bosic. When he returns to Brownsville, he finds that Maria has become a mature and beautiful young woman. Ivan and Maria marry, but Ivan's war trauma leads to impotence and emotional blocks. This puts their marriage under great strain and Ivan leaves Maria. Lonely Mary is then seduced by the itinerant musician and womanizer Clarence Butts and becomes pregnant by him.
